What are your pet peeves?

  Managing Everyday Annoyances

Everyone has one or two pet peeves that can be quite irritating.

Most of these stem from certain behaviours exhibited by human beings, often without them realizing how bothersome it can be for others.

I've also noticed a particular set of pet peeves that gradually build up, eventually leading to a severe headache.

Firstly, the constant sound of someone inhaling through their runny nose...

Secondly, the act of drinking the collected mucus from their nose or spitting them out.

Thirdly, the phenomenon I call "dragon feet" refers to loud footsteps.

Fourth, the noises people make while eating.

Fifthly, those who ask how you're doing but never actually listen to your response.

Sixth, people who sneeze without bothering to cover their mouths.

A wise person once said that the more you dislike something, the more it draws you close to it. Ironically, that's exactly what's happening to me now. A colleague sitting right before me breathes through a runny nose all day, without fail.

Meanwhile, another coworker beside me audibly swallowed the mucus he had collected. Their symptoms seem to worsen with each changing season.

I have a strong urge to take action and help improve this situation.

There were Thoughts always like, 'Could you please blow your nose? It's quite off-putting!' or 'Would you mind not making those sounds while you drink that? Enjoy your meal!' constantly cross my mind, though I never actually say them out loud.

These individuals seemingly view these actions as normal, and I certainly don't want to create an awkward atmosphere. Instead, I've resolved to find a way to overcome these annoyances and not let them bother me too much.

Here are some exercises that can help make your pet peeves disappear for good or partially.

1. Gently Address the Issue in Private

If a situation is causing you too much stress, it is recommended to address it in private, kindly talking to the person as they may not be aware of the issue.

2. Put Things into Perspective

The pet peeves you're encountering might actually not be such a big deal, and it could be helpful to just relax and take it easy. You might question, "Am I reacting too strongly?" If you find yourself unsure, consider taking a break. Step out of the office, stroll down the stairs, or enjoy a walk in nature.

Just as many people remain unaware of the impact of their actions, it's important to acknowledge that some of my own behaviours might unknowingly serve as pet peeves for others.

Our world is filled with diverse individuals with various habits. Allowing every annoyance to distress can lead to a stressful life.

However, viewing these challenges as opportunities for personal growth and improved relationships can help us embrace the lessons that pet peeves bring.
