Discover the Perfect Stay at Goshiwons - it become Your Ideal Accommodation in Korea!

International Digital Nomads,

Where do they typically stay in Korea for an extended period?

Nowadays, living without a computer is unimaginable. Instead of toiling away for meagre earnings, young people are engaging in money-making activities through creative content and active involvement. They can earn in a few days what others make in a year, marking a significant turning point in their lives.

As the number of high-earning individuals in their 20s 30 s continues to rise, their lifestyles are also undergoing changes. With newfound financial and additional freedom, the trend of experiencing life in different locations for a month has gained popularity nationwide. People are not only travelling within the country but also venturing abroad. Even digital nomads from overseas are visiting various Asian countries, including Korea. When they stay for a short period, Seoul tends to be their base. However, finding suitable accommodation for their brief stay in Korea poses a challenge.

Thankfully, there are numerous options available. For those with the means, hotels with breakfast included are an option. There are also affordable and hygienic motels, although they may not be ideal for long stays. Guesthouses with unique features and Airbnb accommodations are also popular choices. Among digital nomads, goshiwons have emerged as a particularly favoured accommodation type.

Gosiwon is a type of single room found in Korea. It was designed originally for students preparing to take important annual exams. They are characterized by low rent, shared bathrooms and kitchens, and very limited private space.

My perception of goshiwons was that they had small or no windows. The exteriors of the buildings were often covered in pigeon droppings, and various pests crowded around the building's sewer system. The open-ceiling structure required everyone to tolerate the smell of each other's flatulence, with the sound of others snoring filling the air. Additionally, I had concerns about the unfortunate incidents that occurred in Goshiwons in the past. However, with the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, goshiwons have transformed.

Goshiwons now serve as a haven for digital nomads worldwide, shedding the negative associations of unpleasant odours. So, why do they choose goshiwons? The biggest advantage lies in their prime locations. Goshiwons are no longer situated on the outskirts of Seoul. They are strategically positioned in areas with significant population flow, previously favoured by students who needed convenient access to study. Moreover, goshiwons are relatively affordable. Some even refer to them as a fusion of goshiwons and hotels, offering one-month contracts. While most goshiwons have shared shower rooms, laundry facilities, communal kitchens, and toilets, some provide single rooms with everything, including a washing machine, toilet, bed, and desk—similar to officials. Goshiwons provide a peaceful work environment, surrounded by charming cafes and delightful restaurants. If you seek a secure place to stay during your travels and enjoy a restful night's sleep, goshiwons are an excellent choice. The advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages.

So, what is the average price for a goshiwon? Prices can vary depending on the presence of a window and a toilet. Monthly costs range from 450,000 KRW to 500,000 KRW (approximately 350-450 USD).
