Remembering National Liberation Day on August 15th through Korean Movies

Step into Korea's history when the country faced challenges and fought for its freedom. It's been 77 years since Korea broke free from Japan's control after 35 long years. The echoes of the late modern period still feel remarkably close to us.

Imagine immersing yourself in movies that transport you back to those pivotal days.

Here, I present three highly recommended films that offer a deep dive into the colonial period

Firstly, <항거 The Story of Yoo Gwan-soon>

The story sheds light on the life of Yoo Gwan-soon, a central figure in the historic March 1st Movement. However, this film's focus goes beyond the events of the March 1st Independence Movement itself. It delves into the aftermath, specifically highlighting Yoo Gwan-soon's poignant experiences within the confines of Seodaemun Prison.

Facing imprisonment due to her fervent involvement in the independence movement, Yoo Gwan-soon's unwavering dedication to national sovereignty and liberation from Japan is truly inspirational.

While this film paints a vivid picture of the hardships endured in prison, it also serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during those difficult times.

And don't miss <박열 : Anarchist from Colony>

This film was brought to life by director Yi Ju-in. One notable aspect of this director's style is the ability to narrate stories about historical figures, keeping the narrative grounded in facts while infusing moments of his distinctive humour, captivating the audience.

The central character of this narrative is Park Yeol, a historical figure recognized as an anarchist and social activist during the colonial period. The movie delves into his life and experiences.

Against the backdrop of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, Japan, fearing the repercussions of its brutal massacre of over 6,000 innocent Koreans, sought to divert attention by falsely accusing Park Yeol as a convenient scapegoat amidst ongoing anti-Japanese sentiments.

Despite being aware of calculated ploys, Park Yeol was apprehended and had to undergo a trial in Japanese custody.

Throughout the trial, he maintained his composure and dignity despite the compromise of national sovereignty.

Lastly  < 암살 Assassine>

The story of this movie is set in 1933 and follows around three individuals who join forces to assassinate the commander of the Korean garrison and a pro-Japanese collaborator.

While their plan seems foolproof, unexpected twists unfold, taking the story in surprising directions.

Director Choi Dong-hoon wants to keep alive the memories of when our homeland felt distant. He aims to share that sentiment with the audience through this film. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat, adrenaline pumping through your veins.

During Korea's annual commemoration of August 15th, there are often discussions and differing viewpoints. However, regardless,  we all share a deep sense of gratitude for the existence of modern-day South Korea.
